three places with big impact when renovating a home

Ruth wrote to us and said, “I love the spaces in your home. I also love what you’ve done for clients’ homes. Which would you say has had the biggest impact on the homes you’ve worked on, and why? I’m considering a remodel. What order should we go in when renovating our own home?”

See this happy kitchen renovation, here.

Each space has its pros and cons, and every home is different. We all know the age-old truth that updating your kitchens and bathrooms is always a smart investment. But what about the spaces beyond that?

This hallway bath update for the win!

Unfortunately, we aren’t always able to share our work and spaces here. But we love rounding up and showcasing the ones that we are able to share every now and again. This was a great question, and I thought I’d dive in today with some interesting ones: three spaces with a big impact!

1. Three spaces with big impact: Adding On

We’ve handled quite a few additions for clients and in our own home. Any time there’s an opportunity to add on, it’s a smart investment for your house. More square footage equals more value, so additions are always a good idea if in the right situation. Check out our pool room here.  This space was pivotal for creating more square footage, as well as another dining space and main hosting area. It also doubles for us as a studio and office space when not entertaining.

Bonus buildings are also something to consider. Heated and cooled additional spaces can add value to your home. Most appraisers count them as accessory buildings that add square footage.

2. Three Spaces With Big Impact: The Converted Study
We did more than just a study with this house, and I’d encourage you to hop on over and check out some of the before-and-afters with the rest of the spaces! But this will always be one of our faves for simple reasons: creating valuable square footage out of otherwise wasted real estate. You’ll see a few more examples shared here today, but this is one of our all-time faves.

This once-formal dining room was converted into an office space.

In our home, my own office was given a new lease on life, to say the least + an old basement space became the hardest working room for me, personally, in the house.

And thinking “smaller” – you never know where you’ll find extra space, like this kiddos study area.

And while we always focus on this wall, you can see we also made this previously open space its own room.

3. Three Spaces with Big Impact: Basements + Garages

You probably know we don’t shy away from basements and garages. This is another example of utilizing that unused square footage for a great functioning living area! The more challenging the space, the more fun we have, to be honest.

And all the details behind this change are here.

And one of our favorite basements, here!

Bonus: Anything with storage

We must add that anything adding extra storage to the home is always a smart idea.  From bookshelves to closet space and everything in between, any way to upgrade those spaces is so smart.

We hope this helps shed some light on the sometimes overwhelming world of renovations!
