five best tips for using rugs + the best finds

Rugs. I have to say, they’re one of our very favorite elements to use in a space when it comes to building interest and design. So in the name of all things cozy season, we’ve rounded up a few of our all-time faves, along with some of our very favorite tips for working with them: Five Best Tips for Using Rugs + The Best Finds!

First things first, let’s dive into the roundup! You’ll see most of these in photographs below, because every single one has been used in a client space, or in our own home. We have firsthand experience with them. They’re honestly some of our faves. Some of these may be affiliate links, so thank you for understanding!

These are some of our very faves, and we’re thrilled to share them with you today! So without further ado, here are a few of our favorite tips!

1. Five Best Tips for Using Rugs: Don’t Judge a Rug by their Flat Lays.
When rug shopping, I’ve always found that the scanned image used for demo is drastically different than the actual rug, in real life. Most of the rugs you’ll see in these photos have been rounded up in the file above, and you can see that the case is true there, too. So, when shopping and selecting a rug for your home, try to view one in an actual space as well. And when in doubt, I find that the scanned image is much less flattering than the rug in real life… which means while you should always check a vendor’s return policy, it’s usually safe to take a risk on a rug you like. They’re usually much prettier in real life.

2. Five Best Tips for Using Rugs: Go As Large As Possible.
When adding a rug to a space, go as large as possible in the room. My rule of thumb is that it’s also always good to have one set of each leg of furniture on the rug, so that it feels intentional in size. With beds, pull them forward. And when in doubt, measure it out. Twice. If you think it’s the wrong size, rotate it. Check yourself with painter’s tape on the floor and put everything in position. You’ll never regret double-checking yourself.

3. Five Best Tips for Using Rugs: Yes, You Need a Rug in Your Space.
Even with carpet? Don’t get cheap on me, Dodgson. I’ve had a few clients in the past who staunchly believed that they didn’t need a rug because they had carpet. You still need a rug. Don’t ignore that fifth wall- on the floor OR the ceiling, for that matter. With the treasure trove of sources available for spaces today, there’s no reason to go outlandish with those prices. {Every single one that I linked here, with the exception of the blue plaid rug above, is entirely valid for prices. I basically just linked the plaid one so that you had the name of it if you love it and can track it down.} But yes, you need a rug! Always. They bring so much comfort and layering into the space, and are a great opportunity for color. But you don’t have to take my word for it… dah dah dah! –If you can cite these two references, we’re best friends.

4. Five Best Tips for Using Rugs: Don’t Be Afraid to Layer
Sometimes, we fall in love with a rug, but it only comes in a particular size. Sometimes, our spaces have odd angles. {See: our living room with a fireplace in the corner} One handy tool I really believe in is layering patterns with woven finds. They still make a significant impact, but offset, they can handle any odd angle in a room when there are two… and if the patterned rug we’re smitten with is too small… or too pricey- the textured rug can definitely save the day underneath! We love the vibe of this option, and it’s always an innovative tool to remember to keep in your arsenal.

5. Five Best Tips for Using Rugs: Always Consider those Materials.
Not all rugs are created equally. And it’s something to consider with where they’ll be used. Is anyone sensitive to wool? Is this a high-traffic area? For me personally, with dogs, I’ll never use a looped rug again. I need it to hold up, and they don’t stand a chance against their nails. It’s different for everyone personally, but be sure you read up on materials depending on the purpose of said rug, so that you know what will work where within your own home.
