How I Hang Garland on our Stove Hood, Mantel and Staircase!

How to Hang Garland on the Stove Hood

For my stove hood garland I bought these hooks that have a sticky back. I put one hook on each side of the hood on the flat ledge (although you could put it anywhere depending on the style of your hood). I’ve done this for the past two years and it has worked perfectly!

You can’t really see or notice the hook at least on mine since they are white and because it gets covered by the garland (you can fluff the branches up and around it if it shows a little bit)

Oftentimes garland will have loops on one or both sides, so what I do is tie a piece of twine or heavy duty string around that so I can then tie the string onto the hook. You can also sometimes loop the garland right onto the hook. The important thing is to make sure it won’t fall down so you want to do two things:

Follow the manufacturers instructions on attaching the hooks. The area has to be clean and not have any oil residue on it. You’ll also want to make sure the adhesive is firmly attached according to the package instructions before hanging any garland on it.

And secondly, make sure you’ve tied your string or twine tightly so it cannot come undone.

I’ve never had mine fall down from the hood, I think for a few reasons:

1) I only use a lightweight garland and

2) my hood has a ledge that I can attach the hook too which helps hold the weight and

3) I am careful to use the right kind of hook for the job and in following the manufacturer instructions for the hooks to ensure it is firmly attached (which means cleaning the surface first to make sure there’s no oil!).

How to Hang Garland on a Mantel

For our mantel I’ve used these same hooks I mentioned above, placing them on top of the mantel towards the back in several places so I can tie the garland onto it. Using three or four hooks is best so you can distribute the weight evenly.

You can also place nails at an angle in spots that would be another sturdy place to tie a string with garland onto. If the holes would be visible later make sure you can easily fill them.

The other way I hang garland on our mantel is to not attach it at all! This isn’t always the best plan especially if you have a lot of garland or want it to drape down.

However if your mantel is wide enough, your garland isn’t too heavy, and you don’t want much to hang down, you can sometimes just lay it across the mantel. I like to do simple things. My mantel is actually very shallow so it’s not ideal but I make it work!

Several positives of garland simply laying up on the surface of the mantel and not hanging down in swags across the front of the fireplace are: it’s safer especially with dogs and kids (they aren’t as likely to pull it down which has definitely happened at our house), it’s less likely to melt or be a fire hazard (if you have fires in your fireplace!), and you don’t have to damage the mantel or wall.

Hooks will likely make it feel more secure though so if in doubt, I’d get these hooks. One thing to note about the hooks around a hot fireplace is it can melt the adhesive so I wouldn’t want to hang them where that would happen. Up on the mantel away from the heat or on the side would be best.

I know some people use different types of hooks to secure their stockings (like these mantel hooks).

We have stocking holders for display but we usually don’t keep ours up on the mantel for long because our dogs have pulled them down before!

How to Hang Garland on the Staircase

I’m sure other people have lots of good ideas and use special staircase garland ties like these!) for hanging garland on a staircase, but honestly I just tie ours on with ribbons or twine! 🙂 Fancy, yes? Although I am tempted though to get those garland ties!

Our staircase is very small. We keep the decor pretty simple, so I don’t have a lot of heavy garland hang, but here’s what I do.

I secure it at the top of the handrail with a ribbon or twine so it can’t fall forward off the railing, and further down the handrail I tie it again with another ribbon anywhere it will swoop, and again I tie a ribbon to hold it up at the newel post.

You can just pull some of the greenery around to try to hide the ribbon or twine from view on the front side, but I don’t mind it if it’s twine or ribbon that works with our style. But on the backside of the railing you can see where the ribbons are tied over the railing, which doesn’t bother me but think these ties would look tidy and especially if you have a more grand or formal open staircase where the ribbons would be seen more.
