Nostalgia is back in the house with Christmas decorating including classic old school decor. One item that has really made a come back are paper chains…just like you made in 3rd grade…with a fun twist. This time they are super colorful and have nice and thicker links which looks so much more upscale. These are so easy and fun to make with simple supplies and you can even get the kids involved in cutting and gluing as a fun activity. They can be made in any length desired to add a fun pop of color to your Christmas decorating! I created one for my faux mantel and I just adore the pop of color with the ribbons on the trees.
Supplies to Make a Thick Paper Chain
Various color construction paper
Scissors
Ruler
Pencil or markers for marking
Glue Stick (and/or clear tape. May be used alone or together)
Choose Construction Paper Colors
This is the fun part! I ordered a large pack so I would have lots of choice, and could pull out the colors I wanted. It helps to arrange the color layout before cutting because then they can be cut in order which makes it a little easier when assembling.
Cut the Paper Strips to Length
Turn the paper horizontally and cut paper strips to 2 inches wide by 6 inches long for a nice, thick chain link. By cutting the paper on the long part about it will render about 5 pieces of paper link. For a classic thin paper chain, cut the width to only 1 inch and 6 inches long.
Make the First Paper Chain Link
Take a strip of paper and loop the paper over onto itself and apply glue from a glue stick (or clear tape or both) and hold until glued in place. If using tape instead, make sure to apply it so it wraps around to the backside of the chain otherwise it may come loose later when stretched as the chain. Staples can also be used if desired.
Loop the Second Chain
Take a second piece of paper and loop it through the first chain. Loop it on itself and glue the two ends together.
Continue to Build the Chain
Continue adding paper strips to create the chain until it reaches the desired length. Once all assembled, check each link to make sure they are all glued securely. Let sit for 24 hours to make sure the glue is completely dry.
Hang The Paper Chain
Enjoy your paper chain and hang in in doorways, on a non-functioning mantel or even over a mirror. These can be used all over the home! Make sure to hang in an area away from heat, flame or small kids and pets, and keep away from direct sunlight as it may fade the colors.
