the power of {interior} doors

We love doors – clearly we have a thing with them – and today we wanted to talk a little bit about the power of doors when it comes to a renovation.

Have you really thought about it before? Doors are the entrance you use to enter or leave a space, often requiring physical contact to do so, so they’re an important, interactive design element. In a lot of ways, they’re very much the first impression you have before entering a room. They’re one of our very favorite elements to use. And in the past, {see the massive uptick of builder-grade homes beginning circa 1990}, they’ve probably sat on the sidelines for much too long when it comes to their role as essential design elements. Of course, we adore Window World for our exterior doors, but today, we’re covering all things interior.

If you caught this renovation before and after, then you probably spied this amazing door addition to our client’s space. It was a game changer, especially when it came to creating a more study-friendly space for them. The style alone brought a lot of character.

We just wanted to showcase some of our very favorite pieces that have enhanced each space.

We love the modern take on this steel + glass french door. Because the steel-and-glass industrial vibe never gets old.

When it comes to saving room, we’re always fans of pocket doors and the way you can save on that square footage. These are always great examples of a simple addition.

Leading to our finished garage/basement, we didn’t want the door to take up valuable real estate. So, pocket door it was. I actually have a really fun project coming up that pertains to all things pocket doors, and I can’t wait to share how that one turns out!

And as far as saving space, smaller double doors in tight areas are always a great option, too.

Barn doors are a tried-and-true choice when they’re styled right. We were thrilled to place this outdoor barn door with hardware in our cabana. It brought an entirely new element to the space and feels like hanging artwork. On the other side, we keep all the unsightly pool supplies like chemicals, cleaners, floats, towels, and more. All so we can entertain in the main space.

One of my all-time favorites will forever be our very own basement renovation. I sat down and sketched these out, and chose a color. They’re some of my very favorite pieces.

Note the minimal size of the hardware as well, so that it wouldn’t interfere with our tricky ceiling. On the other side of these doors are my office and storage space, now that our laundry room is upstairs. These doors are invaluable and hardworking, dividing the space effectively for entertaining, slumber parties, and more.

It doesn’t hurt that they’re gorgeous, too.

This is one of my own personal favorites as well, in the pool room. When we added our second addition onto our home, we knew that we needed a door to allow plenty of light and flow, but we also wanted it to give us a little privacy when we wanted to divide the space. From using this room as my studio with painting and stained glass, to movie nights with the family or entertaining at night… the door is perfect and I’m obsessed.

When our clients needed to divide a traditionally {and unnecessarily long} living room into a modern-day study… we knew just the solution. These doors added so much to divide the space and allow for privacy, but also create an openness without closing off the house. They’re soft-close, so they’re perfect for little fingers as well. My one regret? Not styling this skeleton with a flower crown on reveal day – I really should have captured her thrilled satisfaction with the space.

But look how good it looks now! GAWGEOUS.

We loved adding this pocket door to our client’s laundry space! Check out more of that design, here.

Which brings us to our new addition, a gloriously fabulous laundry room. It was a much-needed space for our home, and we ADORE the door here. We went for a pocket since we were able to plan ahead, and it’s a treat to open and close… We chose frosted glass, which allows for light flow while still giving us the option to cover up our laundry on a day when it’s not folded. Which is always.

You can see more details of our home here!

Usually we close the door to block out the sound of the dryer, and it is wonderful for noise control, too. At night, it glows when the light is on behind it, making it feel really fun to have as part of our addition.

We used doors here to allow for more space by knocking down the wall in between and opening up the entire closet. The boys now share this closet with their rooms on each side, and it’s the perfect little setup.

I love this angle because it offers a lovely glimpse into their little view. The same is in Emerson’s room, as well. We added to the stained glass we sourced at the local flea market {the sister windows are in our kitchen} and it makes such a pretty addition for her space.

This room has truly come a long way!

These are just a few of the ways that we love to use interior doors. Have an inspired day.
