trend alert: brooches – The Handmade Home

You know how we feel about those trends, but this one from Pinterest definitely needed a little shout-out from us this year. A reader wrote in the other day and asked a bit more about one of my fave personal projects, so I thought I’d share a few FAQs here. Today, we’re covering all things brooches!

Trend alert: Brooches. They’re having a moment in fashion this year. And we say they can have a moment in your home, too. {They’ve been having a moment in ours for a while.} I loved putting this together with my daughter a few years ago. This sewing form is filled with legit vintage and antique brooches, along with a few that we aged ourselves for the filled-up mannequin effect, while she collects more authentic finds. She loves stumbling upon a good find every now and then, and we definitely have our faves. If you’ll be wearing them more, isn’t this the perfect way to style them?

• Where did you get your dress form? First things first, it’s originally from here + I recently found another version, here. This is a great way to build your collection, if you’re interested! I think home should have one of these styled in one way or another.

• Where are the best sources for brooches?
I always check the usual suspects, like Facebook Marketplace, as well as eBay and Etsy. I also love scouring the local flea market and antique malls when out and about. I also love searching Whatnot. These are definitely my fave sources.

• The key is in your search terms.
Helpful tip: Of course, start with basic searches like “vintage brooch,” and take note of the names of the ones you really like. But some of them are easier based on the style you’re looking for. Terms that I like to try are: vintage flower brooches, cameo brooches, starburst brooches, Trifari brooches, Victorian hand brooches, and my very favorite, micro mosaics. This should give you a good start.

Also, be sure to search for lots, because you never know what they’ll hold.

• How did you get the newer ones to look old?
You can check out our original post here about aging these brooches.

Psssst… see her final room reveal, here. Think you’ll be collecting brooches this year? We’d love to hear. Have an inspired day!
