DIY Salt Dough Ornaments: Christmas Tree Footprints & Santa Handprints

If you’re looking for a simple, fun Christmas craft, these DIY salt dough handprint ornaments are always a favorite.

My daughter Courtney made Santa handprint ornaments last year for her baby boy Forrest’s first Christmas, and again this year with Christmas tree footprints, too. Aren’t they adorable?

They are easy to make, use basic pantry ingredients, and turn into special keepsakes you’ll want to hang on the tree every Christmas. They make a great grandparent gift, too!

Here’s how we made them:

4 cups flour

1 cup table salt

1.5 cups warm water

Mix it all together, roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 thickness, stamp hands, cut them out, punch a hole for an ornament (we used a metal straw!), bake at 200-250 for 2-4 hours. (It should feel completely hard and dry, not cool or damp inside)

Paint (acrylic paint, wait for each layer to dry, use a toothpick for small details and a Sharpie for the Santa eyes).

Seal with a spray sealer like this or Mod Podge. Add baker’s twine or ribbon to hang on the tree!

Merry Christmas!
