I love decorating through the seasons, but I don’t want to feel like I have to redecorate the whole house every time a new season arrives. And I definitely don’t want to store a lot of bins filled with season-specific decor.
I don’t mind a bin of special pieces or a rolled-up rug that we bring out for a season, but any more than that begins to feel overwhelming for me to manage.
And to me, feeling overwhelmed defeats the whole point of creating a home that feels like a sanctuary.

This is why I do what I call seasonal focal point decorating.
The idea is simple: rather than adding seasonal decor everywhere, I choose a few focal points around the house where a small seasonal addition to our everyday decor can make a noticeable difference.
A focal point naturally catches your eye, so it doesn’t take much to create a feeling there. A seasonal branch on the mantel, a cozy pillow on a favorite chair, a pretty floral arrangement on the kitchen island, or a small cozy rug in the entry can be enough to make a home feel warm and memorable—like a new season has arrived.

A Little Seasonal Decorating Can Go a Long Way
Our tiny entry is one of my favorite seasonal focal points.
It’s a small space, so I really don’t need much here. This whimsical fall rug makes a seasonal statement all on its own! The charming woodland animals playing in the fall leaves make us smile.
And because it is the first thing we see when we come through the door, that one simple change has an impact beyond the size of the space.
That’s something that matters to me in decorating. I want the things I bring into our home to serve a purpose—not only functionally, but in how they make our home feel.

I want our home to feel welcoming, but I also want it to be meaningful.
I knew our little ones would love being greeted at the door by the forest animals on this rug. Those whimsical moments make us happy, and I hope they become part of what our grandchildren remember about coming to our home someday.
To me, making memories is a wonderful reason to decorate.

Love What You Have More
Seasonal focal point decorating also helps me simplify everything!
Most of our home can stay just as it is, or I can make a few updates throughout the year. Then I can bring in just a few season-specific touches where they’ll have the most impact.
It means I don’t need a storage room full of stuff to create the feeling of fall.
This is one of the core principles behind my Room Recipe Method and what we learn in the HomeBody House. Decorating isn’t just buying stuff to keep up with trends or other people, it’s about learning to build on the foundation of your unique style.
You can learn how to use what you have and understand what you need, on your own budget and timeline, to create a home that feels like you.
Then you can use the simple ingredients and principles of the Room Recipe to pull it all together and create the feeling you want.
It’s not about collecting a lot of stuff for each season. It’s about being intentional with what you bring into your home year round.
When you understand what really makes a difference in a room, you can be much more thoughtful about what you buy, too.
Sometimes the right addition really is worth bringing home. Other times, simply rearranging what you already have or making one small seasonal change is all a room needs.
That’s the kind of decorating I enjoy! It’s fun, meaningful and a reflection of the people inside.
In our house, sometimes all it takes to make our home and the season feel memorable is a few charming woodland animals waiting at the door. 🦊 🐿️ 🐦 🍁
