Andrew Cuomo Scores a Deal on Hamptons Waterfront Estate

Andrew Cuomo has found a waterfront retreat in one of the Hamptons’ increasingly sought-after enclaves — and at a price well below where the property began its latest run on the market.

The former New York governor paid $9.6 million for Seatuck Lodge in Remsenburg, a historic bayfront compound with a private beach, dock, grandfathered boathouse, guest house, pool, tennis court and restored windmill. The 7.35-acre property, which includes three adjacent lots totaling a little more than 3 acres, was originally listed together for $17.5 million in 2022, according to a Behind The Hedges feature at the time. Later, the 4.19-acre compound with all of the structures was listed alone for $11.9 million, and the dropped down to $10.9 million.

Less than a year after losing a New York City mayoral bid to Zohran Mamdani in 2025, Cuomo closed in an all-cash deal on June 23 for the four parcels that went under the radar as it was purchased in the name of a limited liability company.

Cuomo’s brother, broadcaster and journalist Chris Cuomo, and sister Madeline Cuomo have homes in East Hampton and East Quogue respectively. “He did buy it to be close to them,” his spokesman Rich Azzopardi tells Hedges. “Him and Chris especially are avid fisherman so he’s looking forward to that.”

Azzopardi says Cuomo views the purchase as investment and plans to sell the vacant parcels, but is unclear when he will put them on the market.

Listing agent Lauren Spiegel of Douglas Elliman declined to comment on the deal.

The sellers, according to records, were Charles Scharf, Chief Executive Officer of Wells Fargo and the former CEO of Visa Inc., and his wife, Amy Scharf, a prominent New York-based couple also known for high-profile real estate deals.

Ultimately, it seems the property sold at a loss, as the couple, through various LLCs, purchased all four parcels in 2016 for $10.875 million—a figure that set a record for the hamlet at the time. The 4.19-acre property traded for $10.3 million.

Big Renovations

Cuomo’s new summer residence dates to the 19th century and sits along 234 feet of water frontage. The 6,300-square-foot home, originally built by school textbook author Alonzo Reed in the 1890s, was then used as a hunting lodge. It was then converted back to a single-family residence and underwent a major restoration and modern renovation.

“This included opening the ground floor of the main residence into an entertainer’s paradise and blending the original old-world charm of the home with modern amenities throughout,” Spiegel told Hedges in 2022. An elevator and state-of-the-art mechanical systems were also added.

Large windows throughout the bright and airy home capitalize on the southwest-facing views.

“With nine bedrooms and nine-and-a-half bathrooms, this estate is not just a home, but a destination to be lived in, loved and enjoyed,” Spiegel told Hedges in 2022. “It’s truly a retreat you will never want to leave, and perfect for the ultimate waterfront buyer.”

Cuomo, who resigned as Governor in 2021 amid controversy, is an avid boater. Back in 2012, he told The Observer he often took his daughters fishing off Montauk and spent time trolling for striped bass by boat by the Shinnecock Inlet. Chris Cuomo has said his older brother got him into fishing and called him “a great boater.”

Features of the main home include a portecochère, a living room with a wood-burning fireplace, and a handsome home office/library with wood paneling and another wood-burning fireplace. Rich wood floors can be found throughout the house.

The chef’s kitchen is equipped with a Wolf stove, dual ovens and dishwashers, as well as a 17-foot center island and a nearby temperature-controlled wine room.

The light-filled primary bedroom suite on the second level offers dual closets, custom built-ins, and a luxurious bathroom with radiant floors, dual vanities, a soaking tub and a walk-in shower. French doors lead from the bedroom to a deck with sweeping water views.

Three more well-appointed en suite bedrooms are found on the second floor, along with a laundry room.

A third story offers two more bedrooms, including one at the top of the home’s turret, and a bathroom. There is also a bonus space, which could be used as a study or another home office.

In addition, there is a detached garage with space for five cars thanks to a commercial-grade, hydraulic car lift — perfect to house some of Cuomo’s car collection, like his 1968 GTO that he notably rebuilt himself.

The guest house provides an additional four bedrooms, as well as a full kitchen. There is also a pool house with a sauna and a gym adjacent to the 40-by-20-foot heated saltwater gunite pool.

A lush lawn extends to the waterfront. The property also has a Har-Tru tennis court.

Remsenburg: No Longer Off the Beaten Path

Cuomo is the biggest name to settle down in Remsenburg as of late. Previous homeowners have included Stan Lee, of Marvel Comics fame; P.G. Wodehouse, who wrote many of the escapades of Bertie Wooster and his manservant, Jeeves, from a home on Basket Neck Lane; and Frank Loesser, the songwriter behind Broadway shows like Guys and Dolls.

Located on the western end of Southampton Town, Remsenburg has been gaining popularity among buyers in recent years. Still, home values lag far behind the rest of the Hamptons, with $1.87 million being the average home value, according to Zillow.

“Remsenburg, which might once have been seen as ‘off the beaten path’ next to the cachet addresses of the Hamptons, has really emerged over the past few years into a sought-after hamlet, known for its close proximity to the water and the many amenities that Westhampton Beach village has to offer,” Spiegel previously told Hedges.

The hamlet, located on Moriches Bay, is separated from the Atlantic Ocean only by the narrow peninsula where Dune Road continues west from Hampton Bays.

Often referred to as the Speonk-Remsenburg area, Speonk — a Native American word meaning “high place” — is further inland. Speonk dates to the early 1700s, when meadows were leased to Southampton cattle farmers, and settlers built farms there by the mid-1700s. Remsenburg, meanwhile, got its name from Charles Remsen, who donated a new Presbyterian Church in the 1800s.

“With slightly lower taxes and asking prices, it’s become very desirable to those looking for the next Hamptons sweet spot to invest in — not to mention, you’ll enjoy a slightly closer commute to Manhattan,” Spiegel added.

It’s location west of the Shinnecock Canal — and what could be an hour’s drive in the summer to his brother’s place in East Hampton — didn’t stop the former governor from getting out this summer. He was the featured speaker at John Catsimatidis’s breakfast series at 75 Main and he attended a benefit for the Endometriosis Foundation of America at the Julie Keyes Gallery in Sag Harbor in July,
